The Coca-Cola First Generation
Scholarship Program

posted August 13, 2003

A national initiative of The Coca-Cola Foundation, First Generation scholarships help expand opportunities for a college education for the first member of a family to pursue higher education.

The Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship Program, administered in Florida by the Florida Independent College Fund (FICF), provides a $5,000 scholarship to a student who is the first person in his or her immediate family to pursue a college degree.  During academic Year 2003 - 2004, students from 27 FICF member and associate institutions will receive this prestigious award.

Current Coca-Cola First Generation scholars may be nominated for a continuation of the award if the following conditions have been met:

  • achieved a GPA of 3.0 or better for Academic Year 2002 - 2003
  • meets all of the requirements for full-time student status
  • has a record of community/school service and/or leadership
  • submits an essay (limit 300 words) describing their accomplishments during the previous school year

For institutions whose previous year scholar did not achieve a GPA of 3.0:

  • nominate a new student who meets the above criteria (Sr.,  Jr., Soph., Fr.)
  • submit applicant's essay (limit 300 words) describing accomplishments during the previous school year
(if student is a freshman, essay can detail their goals)
  • submit names, addresses, and phone numbers of three references
(please note that student does not need to obtain written letters of reference)

Note to institutions whose nominees are not Seniors:

This is the final year of the original four-year commitment for the Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship Program.  Although we hope the Coca-Cola Foundation will continue this scholarship beyond the original four-year agreement, please understand that the FICF makes no guarantee that this scholarship will be available for the 2004-2005 academic year.

Each institution may nominate one student for this award.

All institutions should forward the one-page essay to FICF either by mail or email (address below).

Information provided on the application will be used to generate a press release to the student's hometown newspaper.

It would be most helpful if, when completing the on-line application, you could indicate whether your nomination is "New" or a  "Renewal" - a drop down menu has been included for your convenience.

If nominee is "New", please remember to submit a list of 3 references from the student.
The list should include:  Name, Address, Phone Number.

Please submit the nomination form and documentation no later than November 21, 2003.

Award of this scholarship is not guaranteed until you
have received written notification.

Only school personnel with the proper
Authentication Code will be able to continue.
